Four friends from Castle Douglas, David McBeth, Chris Anderson, Iain McIntyre, and Sean Gilchrist, have clinched a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend one of golf’s most prestigious events – The Masters tournament. The group emerged victorious in the Golf Scotland US Masters Texas Scramble competition, earning them an all-expenses-paid trip to Augusta National in April, where The Masters is held.
Expressing his excitement, David described the prize as potentially the most significant in amateur golf, highlighting that the package includes tickets for a day at the tournament, a round of golf at another location, accommodation, and a hire car. Despite their achievement, David humbly acknowledged that they are not professional golfers and joked that people think they will be competing at The Masters itself.
The journey to victory began at the Scottish finals of the tournament held at Deer Park Golf Club in Livingston. Despite having relatively high handicaps compared to others, the team displayed impressive skill and composure, securing a win over their closest competitors by 1.4 shots. David shared details of the intense competition, noting specific challenges such as having to nominate each team member for a par three shot.
The camaraderie among the friends was evident, with David revealing that their bond strengthened through golf, particularly during an annual memorial golf day for David’s late brother, Iain.
