An opera performance in Germany’s Stuttgart has left 18 theatregoers feeling severely ill with nausea after witnessing a controversial show featuring live piercings, explicit sexual acts, rollerblading nuns, and real and fake blood. The production called Sancta, created by Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger, is based on a 1920s expressionist opera that explores the relationship between celibacy and lust in Christianity.
Over the weekend, audience members at the Stuttgart opera house required medical attention following the intense and graphic performance. Sebastian Ebling, the opera spokesperson, confirmed that eight individuals sought assistance on Saturday, while an additional ten needed help on Sunday. Ebling advised audience members to carefully read the content warnings before watching the show and to seek support from the visitor service if needed. He suggested averting their gaze if they felt uncomfortable during the performance.
Reports indicate that the 18 affected audience members experienced nausea and required first aid, with three of them becoming so ill that a doctor had to be called in. Despite these incidents, tickets for the remaining shows in Stuttgart and upcoming performances in Berlin have sold out. A warning on the official theatre portal alerts viewers to expect explicit sexual acts, violence imagery, real and fake blood, piercing, nudity, strobe effects, high volume, and the use of incense. The show’s directors acknowledge that the content may be distressing for some audience members.
Florentina Holzinger, known for her provocative shows blending nudity, acrobatics, and feminist themes, faced backlash from Catholic leaders following the premiere of Sancta in Schwerin earlier this year. Archbishop of Salzburg Franz Lackner and Bishop of Innsbruck Hermann Glettler condemned the opera as offensive and disrespectful to religious beliefs, particularly for its portrayal of the Holy Mass.
