Skygazers in the UK and Ireland were treated to a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, with experts predicting more to come in the near future. The recent show was a result of the sun entering its period of greatest solar activity, which means that vibrant displays of the aurora borealis could continue until the middle of next year.
The sun operates on an 11-year cycle, oscillating between periods of intense activity and quieter phases. During periods of heightened activity, known as solar maximum, the sun releases charged particles that travel through space at astonishing speeds. Some of these particles are intercepted by the Earth’s magnetic field and interact with oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere.
The collision between these particles results in the emission of light at various wavelengths, creating the mesmerising and colourful aurora displays in the night sky. Oxygen typically produces a greenish-yellow or red light, while nitrogen tends to emit a blue light. Additionally, both oxygen and nitrogen molecules release ultraviolet light that requires special cameras on satellites to be detected.
Photographs of the enchanting natural phenomenon were captured across various regions of England, Scotland, and Ireland, with sightings reported as far south as Kent and East Anglia. The current peak in activity is forecasted to last until mid-2025, as stated by the Royal Astronomical Society. Following this peak, the Northern Lights will only be visible in countries at high latitudes like Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Scandinavia, Finland, and Russia.
Alternatively, the southern lights, known as aurora australis, can be observed in regions such as Antarctica, New Zealand, and Australia. The recent display of the Northern Lights has sparked excitement among sky enthusiasts, offering a rare and captivating glimpse of nature’s breathtaking light show.
