The breakfast staple that cuts heart disease risk by almost a fifth

Tea, a beloved British morning staple, has been identified by the European Society of Cardiology as a significant contributor to heart health. It contains a plant bioactive recommended by the experts to help prevent the progression of heart conditions. Despite this, a study by the Tea Advisory Panel (TAP) revealed that four out of five Brits are unfamiliar with polyphenols, with only 19% aware of tea being a source. Dr Carrie Ruxton of the TAP emphasised the need for awareness and education regarding the health benefits of polyphenols found in tea.

In addition to the European heart health guidelines, experts highlight the positive impact of bioactive compounds like flavonoids, present in tea, fruits, and vegetables, on blood pressure, blood vessels, cholesterol levels, and inflammation. Studies show a potential 19% reduction in the risk of chronic conditions, including heart disease, with high flavonoid diets. The recommendation is to consume approximately four cups of tea daily to maximise heart health benefits and intake of flavan-3-ols, a group of flavonoids essential for heart and metabolic health.

Dr Ruxton urges prioritising food sources like tea and fruits to meet the flavan-3-ol intake targets for optimal heart health. Despite the known benefits, a significant percentage of Brits are not consuming enough tea to achieve these health advantages, highlighting the need for increased consumption awareness. The European Society of Cardiology’s recognition of tea as a heart-healthy option underlines the importance of incorporating flavonoid-rich foods into daily diets for improved heart health and overall well-being.

As research continues to uncover the health benefits of flavonoids and polyphenols present in everyday foods like tea, the promotion of these dietary components for heart health becomes crucial. The simplicity of enjoying a cup of tea can contribute significantly to supporting heart health and reducing the risk of chronic conditions. By raising awareness and educating the public on the health-promoting properties of tea, more individuals can take proactive steps towards improving their heart health through this accessible and enjoyable daily habit.
