A massive German oil tanker, Annika, is ablaze off the Baltic coast following reports of an explosion, with emergency services launching a significant rescue operation. The 73-metre-long vessel has been on fire since 9:15 am local time while anchored in the Bay of Mecklenburg. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a large explosion this morning before huge plumes of smoke started billowing from the ship.
It’s not yet confirmed how many crew members were on board at the time, however, local reports suggest that around seven people were known to be on the vessel, with multiple injuries reported. An emergency tug boat was promptly dispatched to unload and cool the ship before other vessels joined to combat the flames and evacuate those onboard.
A spokeswoman for the Cuxhaven Emergency Command, which is spearheading the rescue operation, informed local media that the tanker currently holds 640 tonnes of heavy oil. The tanker “Annika” has been burning in the Baltic Sea between Kühlungsborn and Warnemünde since Friday morning, with eyewitnesses telling the OZ that there was a deflagration or explosion, followed by clouds of smoke rising. The fire was reported at 9:14 am while the “Annika” was anchored in the Bay of Mecklenburg. An oil freighter, approximately 100 meters long, called “Annika,” is currently burning off the coast of Börgerende.
Several rescue boats and a helicopter are in use, and there have already been several injuries reported. The vessel has caused concern as it continues to burn, with efforts focused on containing the blaze and ensuring the safety of the crew members on board. The situation remains critical, and authorities are working tirelessly to manage the incident and prevent any further escalation.
