Disney resort faces backlash after charging guests stranded by Hurricane Milton for ‘sandwich kits’

A Disney resort in Orlando, Florida, has come under fire for reportedly charging guests stranded by Hurricane Milton for emergency “sandwich kits”. The kits, which included peanut butter, jelly, a loaf of bread, and utensils, were being sold for $10 (£7.65) to those impacted by the natural disaster. Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm, has caused at least 14 deaths, 3.4 million power outages, and widespread damage in Florida and surrounding areas.

Despite initial praise for the gesture, reactions quickly turned negative as people discovered that the kits were not provided free of charge to those in need. A TikTok video shared by a user known as “Disney Mama” Alyssa Sprake showing the food packages went viral, sparking outrage among viewers. Comments on the video expressed shock at the fact that Disney was charging for essential food items during such a challenging time.

Critics pointed out Disney’s vast wealth and resources, arguing that the company could afford to provide the kits for free. Some social media users questioned the expectation that the food should be given away at no cost, suggesting that guests would have had to purchase groceries if they were at home during the storm. Others defended the resort’s actions, noting that the $10 price for the sandwich kits was reasonable given the circumstances.

In addition to the controversial sandwich kits, guests stranded at the Disney resort were reportedly offered a 40% discount on accommodation and reduced prices at the hotel’s restaurants. The Independent has reached out to Disney for comment on the situation.

The incident has sparked debate online about corporate responsibility in times of crisis and the ethics of charging for essential goods during emergencies. As the fallout continues, many are closely monitoring how Disney will address the backlash and respond to the criticism.
