North Korea has accused South Korea of flying drones to its capital in order to drop anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets and has issued a threat to attack should such flights occur again. The North Korean Foreign Ministry released a statement on Friday alleging that South Korean drones were spotted in the night skies of Pyongyang on October 3, as well as on Wednesday and Thursday of the same week.
The ministry condemned South Korea for violating North Korea’s sovereignty and jeopardizing its security. It warned that North Korean forces were prepared to utilise any means of attack and would respond swiftly and without prior warning if South Korean drones were detected within its territory again. The statement ominously declared, “The safety lock on our trigger has now been released. We will be prepared for everything and will be watching. The criminals should no longer gamble with the lives of their citizens.”
South Korea’s government and military have yet to make an official response to North Korea’s allegations. Tensions between the two Koreas have been escalating in recent months, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conducting a series of weapons tests and making threats while South Korea has bolstered its joint military exercises with the United States in response.
In addition to the drone incident, North Korea has been engaging in a peculiar form of psychological warfare by sending thousands of balloons loaded with paper waste, plastic, and other debris to be dropped over South Korea. This campaign has further strained relations between the neighbouring nations.
On Wednesday, North Korea announced plans to permanently seal its border with South Korea and construct defensive structures along the front line to counter what it described as “confrontational hysteria” from South Korean and US forces. The North Korean military stated through state media that it would completely cut off transportation links and fortify areas connected to South Korea with robust defense structures.
North Korea justified these actions as defensive measures aimed at preventing war and safeguarding the country’s security, while accusing its adversaries of escalating tensions through military manoeuvres and aggressive rhetoric. The ongoing tensions between North and South Korea underscore the delicate balance in the region and the potential for further conflict if the situation is not carefully managed.
