Scots luxury car leather supplier to achieve net zero emissions next year

A Scottish luxury car leather supplier is making significant strides towards achieving net zero emissions by next year. Bridge of Weir Leather, a key supplier to renowned motor brands like Aston Martin, McLaren, Jaguar Land Rover, and Polestar, is well on its way to meeting its carbon-neutral target by the end of 2025. The company, which set this goal in 2018, has already achieved 90% progress towards its objective. Known for producing the lowest-carbon leather in the global automotive industry, Bridge of Weir’s parent company, Scottish Leather Group, shared this exciting development in its annual environmental report.

According to the report, Bridge of Weir is also making headway towards its zero waste to landfill target by the end of 2025, with 89% of its waste now being recycled or recovered through its processes—an increase from 77% the previous year. The company recently inaugurated a new £14 million Super Tannery, resulting in an impressive 82% reduction in energy usage and a 42% decrease in water consumption. Additionally, Bridge of Weir has invested in innovative technologies like biodegradable leather and ensures 98% of its hides are sourced from UK and Irish farms to prevent deforestation.

Looking ahead, the company plans to install an onsite solar plant next year to generate 25% of its operational electricity. James Muirhead of Bridge of Weir expressed pride in their leadership role within the industry. Muirhead stated, “We are an industry leader…Net zero leather manufacturing is within sight.” He highlighted the company’s commitment to transparency, traceability, and producing the world’s lowest-carbon leather for luxury car brands, solidifying Bridge of Weir’s reputation as a sustainable supplier in the automotive sector.
