Youngsters at St Andrew’s RC Primary School in Dumfries have come together to support their local community by collecting food donations for a food bank in Palmerston. The children in P3 initiated the donation drive by setting up a collection box, which soon filled up with contributions from the whole school. Impressed by the initiative, Headteacher Mr. Barry McIntyre expressed his pride in the students’ compassion and community spirit.
In the spirit of giving back, the school held a special Harvest Mass led by Father Gerald Donnelly, where pupils expressed gratitude for the food they have and acknowledged the efforts of those who provide a variety of nutritious food. The pupils also took a moment to consider those who may not have enough to eat. This led to the decision to donate the collected food items to the food bank at Palmerston.
On behalf of their classmates, two P3 pupils, Chloe Bennett and Georgie Rowan Robertson, shared their delight in being able to help those in need. Chloe highlighted the fun they had organizing the donation drive, emphasizing the importance of supporting those who are less fortunate. Meanwhile, Georgie expressed gratitude towards all the donors and the joy they felt in contributing to a good cause.
Teachers Mrs. Aisling Gilligan and Mrs. Lorena Davidson commended the children for their initiative and willingness to assist others in need. They highlighted the valuable skills the students developed through this act of kindness and praised the students for their proactive approach to helping the community. Mrs. Davidson further emphasised the importance of supporting student-led initiatives and nurturing their ideas.
