President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has made a passionate appeal to his allies to continue providing assistance to his country, stressing the importance of sustained aid as he received a commitment of a new weapons package from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The pledge came during a European tour by Zelenskyy, aimed at garnering support for his “victory plan” to bring an end to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Arriving in Berlin following visits to London, Paris, and Rome, Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts were part of a rescheduled summit with U.S. President Joe Biden and other allied leaders due to the disruption caused by Hurricane Milton. Chancellor Scholz reiterated Germany’s strong support for Ukraine, highlighting Berlin’s focus on providing air defense assistance. Germany, along with Belgium, Denmark, and Norway, is set to deliver a new military support package worth around 1.4 billion euros by the end of the year, including various defensive weapons systems and equipment.
Expressing gratitude for the planned aid, Zelenskyy emphasised the need for consistent support to ensure the protection of Ukrainian citizens and territories. Germany’s current military aid budget for Ukraine stands at nearly 7.5 billion euros, with a planned decrease to 4 billion euros next year. Berlin aims to supplement future aid through a proposed $50 billion international loan package, funded by profits from frozen Russian assets, allowing Kyiv to procure weapons directly.
During the discussions in Berlin, Scholz reassured Zelenskyy of the steadfast support from Germany, sending a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that delaying tactics would not diminish the backing for Ukraine. With Ukrainian forces facing pressure in the Donetsk region, particularly following recent territorial losses, Zelenskyy’s plea for continued aid is crucial to strengthen Ukraine’s position against Russia.
The Ukrainian leader outlined his vision to conclude the war by 2025, presenting it as a pathway to a successful peace summit that would bring a definitive end to the conflict. Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of collaboration with Western partners in enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against Russian aggression. Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy held a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, discussing the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and exploring avenues for a just and lasting peace in the country.
As the diplomatic efforts and calls for aid intensify, Zelenskyy’s strategic engagements with global allies underscore Ukraine’s determination to secure support to navigate through the complex geopolitical landscape while striving for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
