Alpine Unveils A390_β Concept: Teasing a Formula 1-Inspired All-Electric SUV
French car manufacturer and Formula One team Alpine, a part of the Renault Group, has showcased an innovative concept hinting at the brand’s upcoming venture into the SUV market. The A390_β offers a glimpse into the production model A390 slated for release next year.
While certain extravagant features of the concept, such as rear-hinged back doors and unique lighting, may not carry over to the production version, Alpine CEO Philippe Krief asserts that the design of the A390_β remains true to the forthcoming model, with the exterior being 85% faithful to the final product.
Described as a Sport Fastback, the A390_β boasts a design inspired by a droplet of water, embodying a monolithic bubble shape. Drawing inspiration from the highly acclaimed A110 two-seater sportscar, the concept aims to deliver exceptional driving dynamics while accommodating up to five passengers.
Employing Renault Group’s AmpR electric car platform, similar to the one utilized in the new Renault 5 and the sportier A290, Alpine has fine-tuned the AmpR Medium platform for the A390 to reflect the brand’s F1-inspired ethos.
Equipped with three electric motors – two at the rear axle and one at the front – and a dynamic four-wheel-drive system, the A390 promises a lightweight feel enhancing its performance. Although specific details regarding battery size and performance figures are yet to be disclosed, the A390 is anticipated to compete with high-end electric SUVs like the Porsche Macan 4 Electric.
The A390_β’s distinctive features, including its intricate lighting design and Alps-inspired interior, are expected to be refined for production. The interior showcases an F1-inspired cockpit with an innovative start mechanism using an ice crystal and an overtake button akin to F1 racing.
Continuing the F1 influence, the front seats of the A390 are modelled after Alpine’s F1 cars, while rear passengers enjoy a plush, comfort-oriented seating experience. The concept’s premium audio system by Devialet enhances the driving experience by amplifying the engine’s natural sounds.
Scheduled to be the second of five new models from Alpine in the next five years, the A390 demonstrates the brand’s commitment to innovation and performance excellence.
With bold design elements and cutting-edge technology, the Alpine A390_β concept sets the stage for an exciting new chapter in the world of electric SUVs.
