In Dumfriesshire, a group of dedicated volunteers have been achieving blooming success for their villages over the past two decades. The Brighten up Kirkconnel and Kelloholm volunteers have been working tirelessly to cultivate beautiful floral displays and enhance the community for both residents and visitors.
This year marked their 20th anniversary, and the group went above and beyond to create stunning displays that caught the eye of judges at the Beautiful Scotland ceremony. The volunteers were awarded a gold certificate and a highly commended certificate in the Community Involvement Award category, recognising their efforts to make Kirkconnel and Kelloholm blossom and flourish.
In addition to their success at the Beautiful Scotland ceremony, the volunteers also received a Gold Medal Certificate at the Keep Scotland Beautiful awards in Aberdeen. Their dedication to gardening and horticulture was further recognised when The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society presented them with a Caley Award for Services to Gardening and Horticulture in Scotland.
Since 2004, the group has dedicated countless hours to beautifying their villages, with each year bringing new floral displays and planting initiatives. Led by chairman Gary Hughes, the volunteers have not only brought vibrant colours to the community but have also prioritised environmental sustainability by planting pollinating shrubs and bulbs to support biodiversity.
One of their standout projects this year was the complete revamp of the bed at the chemist car park, which involved removing existing shrubs and planting pollinating shrubs. They have also collaborated with local groups like the Brownies to plant containers with colourful pollinating plants.
The group’s commitment to their community has not gone unnoticed, with a long list of awards and trophies acquired over the years, including the best Small Village Trophy and various medals at the Beautiful Scotland competition. Their efforts showcase how a shared passion for gardening can truly transform a community and bring joy to all who experience their blooming displays.
As they continue to nurture their villages and inspire others to join in their green-fingered endeavours, it’s clear that Brighten up Kirkconnel and Kelloholm are not just cultivating flowers, but also a sense of community pride and environmental stewardship that will continue to blossom for years to come.
