R Kelly’s daughter has come forward with disturbing allegations of sexual abuse by the singer during her childhood, as revealed in a new documentary. Joanne Kelly, aged 26, disclosed for the first time that she was also a victim of her father, the convicted sex offender, in the TVEI Network’s two-part documentary titled “R Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey”. The documentary features emotional interviews with Joanne, her siblings, and their mother Drea Kelly, who was married to the disgraced rapper from 1996 to 2009.
In the documentary, Joanne bravely shared, “He was my everything. For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me. I was too scared to tell anybody. I was too scared to tell my mom.” While Joanne did not provide specific details about the alleged abuse in the first episode, she expressed that she believes jail is a suitable place for Kelly, considering her personal experience.
Recounting her childhood trauma, Joanne revealed that she was only eight or nine years old when she allegedly faced sexual abuse by her father. Tearfully recalling the abuse, she stated, “I just remember waking up to him touching me. And I didn’t know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep.”
When Joanne eventually confided in her mother about the abuse in 2009, they reported it to the police and filed an anonymous complaint. However, due to the time that had passed, they were informed that prosecution was not possible. Despite her bravery in speaking out, Joanne expressed feeling that her disclosure led to no justice.
Kelly has vehemently denied these allegations through his lawyer, referencing a previous unfounded allegation made by his ex-wife. The 57-year-old singer is currently serving a 31-year prison sentence for convictions related to racketeering, sex trafficking, and illegal sexual activity. The documentary sheds light on the impact of the abuse on Joanne’s life and her ongoing struggle to cope with the trauma.
