A Scottish couple’s fairytale ‘love at first sight’ marriage was tested when an agonising 11-month visa delay threw their lives into chaos. Rebekka Arioua-Hill, 25, from Scotland, married Alaeddine Arioua, 29, from Algeria in May 2023. The couple, residing in East Calder, West Lothian, first met online on an Instagram page advocating for dwarfism awareness back in 2017. After years of texting and video calls, they finally met in person in 2022, where Al proposed to Rebekka. Following their marriage in Scotland, the couple faced uncertainties as Al’s visa was due to expire soon. They applied for a spousal visa extension, which would grant Al an additional 30 months in the UK, but they endured a heart-wrenching 11-month wait for the visa to be approved.
Rebekka shared how the visa delay left Al in a state of limbo, unable to work or access disability benefits. The couple had diligently submitted all required documents before Al’s original visa expired in August 2023. However, they faced a prolonged wait as Al’s passport was held by authorities, preventing him from working or claiming public funds. Rebekka expressed frustration at the lack of progress and support, highlighting the challenges they encountered during the visa application process. Despite multiple attempts to seek assistance from the Home Office, they were left feeling helpless and stranded.
After countless months of uncertainty, the couple’s perseverance paid off when Al’s visa extension was finally granted on October 11. The Home Office, upon being contacted by the media, apologised for the prolonged delay and confirmed the approval of the application. While overjoyed with the positive outcome, Rebekka and Al remain wary of the future, knowing they will have to navigate the visa renewal process again in 30 months. Rebekka expressed concerns about the potential recurrence of stress and delays, hoping for a smoother experience next time.
