Tornadoes cause unexpected damage far from Hurricane Milton’s path
Residents in South Florida experienced unexpected devastation from tornadoes far from where Hurricane Milton made landfall. Tony Brazzale, a diving boat captain living in Wellington, southeastern Florida, initially believed Hurricane Milton would have minimal impact on his family. However, as the hurricane approached, a tornado formed in the sky above his home, leading to significant damage despite the hurricane passing by.
The tornado shattered windows, tore off roof shingles, uprooted a tree, and scattered debris across Brazzale’s yard. He described the tornado as the reason for the actual damage, highlighting that without it, Hurricane Milton would have been a non-event for his family. This scenario was repeated in numerous other locations in South Florida, where tornadoes associated with Milton caused destruction.
Meteorologists estimated that at least 38 tornadoes were linked to Hurricane Milton, with the National Weather Service issuing 126 tornado warnings in Florida on the day of the storm. This event could potentially place Milton in the top 10 list for hurricanes with the highest number of tornadoes. While Florida typically experiences around 50 tornadoes annually, the impact of Milton’s tornadoes was exceptional.
