Sir Keir Starmer has shared the harrowing story of a domestic abuse case that moved him to support The Independent’s Brick by Brick campaign, aimed at providing a safe haven for women and children escaping violence. The campaign seeks to raise £300,000 to build a secure refuge for those in need.
The Prime Minister has personally endorsed The Independent’s initiative, highlighting the critical importance of addressing issues surrounding domestic abuse. Sir Keir pledged his and his cabinet’s support for the cause, expressing his commitment to ensuring at-risk individuals have access to necessary support and safe spaces to rebuild their lives.
Recalling the tragic case of Jane Clough, a nurse who was fatally stabbed 71 times by her ex-partner, Sir Keir emphasised the devastating impact of domestic violence on families and lives. Having interacted with survivors and families affected by domestic abuse during his tenure as Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Keir’s advocacy for victims’ rights runs deep.
The Brick by Brick campaign, in partnership with domestic abuse charity Refuge, has already raised £130,000 towards its goal. Donations of £15, symbolised by purchasing a brick, will contribute to constructing a secure environment for women, children, and their pets to seek refuge from abusive situations.
Support for the campaign has been widespread, with notable figures such as the Queen, Cherie Blair, Dame Helen Mirren, and Sir Patrick Stewart championing the cause. Dame Joanna Lumley’s rallying cry, “Be a Brick, Buy a Brick,” encapsulates the essence of standing in solidarity with survivors of domestic abuse.
