Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands coach, expressed his frustration after his captain, Virgil van Dijk, was sent off during the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Hungary. Koeman stated that he will not be calling up a replacement for the suspended captain for their crucial match against Germany on Monday. Van Dijk received two yellow cards in three minutes towards the end of the second half of the Nations League game. The first card was for dissent, and the second was for a foul that resulted in a straightforward booking.
Koeman was puzzled by the circumstances surrounding Van Dijk’s first yellow card, as the defender protested after Donyell Malen was fouled while advancing towards goal while the Dutch team was trailing 1-0. Koeman mentioned to the NOS, “That moment was frustrating,” adding, “I don’t understand it. I think we agreed that a captain can protest to a referee.”
Despite the setback, Koeman confirmed that there would be no additions to the squad for the upcoming match against Germany. Germany currently tops Group A3 in the Nations League with seven points from three matches, two points ahead of the Netherlands. This match against Germany could see the Dutch team either rise to the top of the group or fall five points behind with two games remaining.
Reflecting on the draw against Hungary, where the Netherlands equalized late in the match after Van Dijk’s red card, Koeman said, “We didn’t surrender, we went to play one-on-one and made the equaliser. Then they (Hungary) created some dangerous situations, but we defended well. That way you leave with a reasonable feeling.”
The upcoming clash with Germany is of utmost importance for the Netherlands, and Koeman will be looking to rally his team and secure a positive result.
