Residents of a high-rise block in Edinburgh’s city centre have been left frustrated as their communal lift has been out of operation for several weeks. The tenants of one side of Lochview Court raised the issue with Edinburgh Council around the commencement of the Festival Fringe in August 2024, but they claim there has been no progress in repairing the lift.
Sasha, a resident on the eighth floor since 2006, mentioned that while lift repairs used to be swift, the current wait is much longer. The 48-year-old expressed concern about the safety risks of using the slippery stairs, particularly during rainy weather. He highlighted the impact on elderly residents, individuals with disabilities, and families with children who heavily rely on the lift for mobility.
Alas Abdullah, who recently moved into the building in early October 2024, humorously remarked about needing a “two-day rest” after navigating the stairs to his new home. He described the challenges of moving in, as he had to utilize the lift on the other side of the building and physically transport his belongings across the premises.
A Turkish student at Edinburgh University, residing on the seventh floor, shared similar difficulties during the moving-in process, having to carry furniture across and up the stairs due to the malfunctioning lift. Parents, Azam and Hind, with three children, expressed their struggles in managing without the lift, particularly avoiding another faulty lift due to safety concerns.
Jane Meagher, the housing, homelessness, and fair work convener, responded to the situation by acknowledging the need for lift repairs, attributing the issue to a motor malfunction. She assured residents that efforts are underway to restore the lift’s functionality promptly by sending the motor for specialist repair.
The ongoing inconvenience faced by residents at Lochview Court underscores the essential role that functioning lifts play in high-rise buildings, ensuring accessibility and safety for all occupants, especially those with specific mobility requirements. As the repairs progress, residents eagerly anticipate the restoration of lift services to alleviate the challenges posed by the extended period of inconvenience.
