A devastating wildfire in southern Greece has tragically claimed the lives of two individuals, Greek authorities have confirmed. The incident unfolded overnight as a large wildfire ripped through forested areas above a seaside resort in southern Greece. The blaze, which occurred near Xylokastro in the Peloponnese region, led to the untimely demise of two individuals.
The fire service reported that approximately 350 firefighters, supported by eight water-dropping aircraft, managed to gain control over the majority of the fire early on Monday. To safeguard residents, half a dozen villages were evacuated as a precautionary measure after the fire erupted on Sunday. The ferocity of the flames was exacerbated by powerful winds that swept through the parched forests following a warm spring and hot summer.
Authorities have indicated that the two deceased are believed to be local residents who were reported missing late on Sunday. Thankfully, there are no further individuals currently unaccounted for. As of now, there have been no reports of homes being engulfed by the fire in the impacted area, which is located approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) southwest of Athens.
