North Carolina football player Tylee Craft has tragically passed away at the young age of 23 after battling a rare form of lung cancer. The devastating news was revealed by coach Mack Brown during a postgame news conference following the Tar Heels’ game against Georgia Tech.
Craft had been fighting the rare lung cancer since his diagnosis in March 2022. Despite the odds, he showed tremendous strength and resilience throughout his two and a half year battle. Coach Brown commended Craft for his unwavering spirit and positive attitude, highlighting his dedication to the team by never missing a meeting or practice.
The University of North Carolina (UNC) honoured Craft during Saturday’s football game, which also coincided with the team’s annual Cancer Awareness Game. Friends and family members donned shirts with Craft’s name and number in a touching on-field ceremony. Wide receiver J.J. Jones paid tribute by wearing Craft’s jersey during the game.
Coach Brown expressed his profound sadness at the loss, recalling an emotional moment shared with Craft’s mother during the game. He emphasised the need for strength and support for the team as they navigate through this difficult time. The UNC football program also released a statement on social media, announcing Craft’s passing and paying tribute to his memory.
Craft, who hailed from Sumter, South Carolina, had made a significant impact both on and off the field. Despite his illness, he remained connected to the football program and continued to inspire those around him. The UNC men’s basketball team also honoured Craft by wearing shirts with his name and number during a scrimmage at the Smith Center.
