A woman who was raped at knifepoint by a teenage sex attacker in a play park has expressed her disappointment in the justice system following the sentencing of her assailant. The teenage attacker, who was only 14 at the time of the assault, forced the woman to undress, took photos of her, and then raped her while holding a knife to her neck. During the court proceedings, the teenager claimed he couldn’t recall the attack due to being intoxicated with alcohol and cannabis.
The victim criticized the sentence received by her attacker, stating that he was given an extended sentence of five years and three months, with only five years being custodial and the remaining three years under surveillance upon release. She expressed her frustration with the fact that the attacker might serve only two-and-a-half years due to various factors reducing his sentence.
The assault occurred as the woman, now 17, was making her way home from a local Sainsbury’s store in Prestwick, Ayrshire, just before Christmas last year. The attacker dragged her to a children’s play park, where the heinous attack took place. Despite the trauma she endured, the victim managed to seek help from a passerby and the police after the assault.
Last week, the teenage rapist, now 15, appeared in the High Court in Edinburgh, where he was sentenced to an extended period of five years and three months, with three years to be served under supervision upon his release back into the community. The judge highlighted the ongoing psychological and physical impact the attack had on the victim, emphasising the severity of the crime.
