A new heritage and countryside trail has been unveiled in North Lanarkshire to offer visitors and locals a glimpse into the area’s rich history. The North Lanarkshire Stories trail spans across 10 locations and aims to attract tourists by exploring the region’s unique past. This trail presents an interactive experience with engaging stories written by renowned storyteller Shona Cowie and illustrated by artist Johnathan Chamberlain at each location. Visitors can access the full stories in text or audio format using QR codes provided on informative signs.
Each site on the trail also includes a rubbing tile activity featuring an animal from the story, making it enjoyable for families with children. An added interactive service allows users to engage with the main character of the story through QR codes. To commemorate the trail’s launch, a limited-edition book containing all 10 stories and illustrations, along with two bonus tales, has been released. The first 100 visitors who visit six of the trail’s locations will be eligible for a free copy of the book.
Councillor Alex McVey, convener of the enterprise and fair work committee, expressed enthusiasm for residents and visitors to explore the trail sites and delve into the captivating stories that highlight North Lanarkshire’s heritage. The trail offers a mix of storytelling, interactive elements, and picturesque locations that appeal to history enthusiasts and families seeking an educational day out. The ten trail locations include prominent sites such as Antonine Wall, Palacerigg Country Park, and Strathclyde Park, each offering a unique story to discover. The project, initiated and led by North Lanarkshire Council, received funding from the UK Government to promote the region’s historical significance.
