Airlines may soon be changing the game when it comes to hand luggage, thanks to a new design for overhead lockers that could mean more space for everyone on board. Passengers tired of the luggage tetris game might soon get relief with new aircraft designs promising much larger overhead bins, making it easier to comply with airline hand luggage rules and bring more gear on board.
The current struggle often involves squeezing belongings into one bag, which then gets crammed under a seat to avoid hefty fees and meet regulations. This can result in holiday outfits becoming severely creased. However, checking in baggage isn’t always the most attractive option due to long waits at the carousel and the risk of items going missing.
Airbus has revealed the ‘Airspace L Bins’, which have the capability to fit 60% more cabin luggage than traditional systems. These upgraded compartments can accommodate roller bags placed vertically, allowing for cases as tall as 61cm, as wide as 38cm, and as deep as 25cm. The quick installation of these bins on various aircraft means flight turnaround times won’t be significantly impacted.
Leading the way in embracing this development, Lufthansa is set to start the retrofitting process beginning in 2025. Airbus’ head of commercial services for Europe, Charbel Youzkatli, highlighted that the introduction of larger bins aims to enhance the passenger experience, as reported by CNN. However, the decision to relax rules around bringing more hand luggage on board will ultimately rest with individual airlines.
Some airlines may argue that while they have the space, the extra weight of additional hand luggage may require more fuel and could result in additional charges for passengers. Currently, airlines like TUI, easyJet, Ryanair, and British Airways each have their own policies on what can be brought onboard flights for free – whether that includes one small bag or two. Understanding these rules is crucial to avoid unexpected expenses, especially if it leads to having to pay for checked baggage.
