A powerful typhoon is currently lashing the northernmost islands of the Philippines, with officials issuing warnings of potentially severe damage to coastal villages. Typhoon Krathon, with sustained winds reaching up to 175 kph (109 mph) and gusts up to 215 kph (133 mph), is causing significant concern among residents and authorities.
The slow-moving typhoon was last tracked over the coastal waters of Balintang island off Cagayan and Batanes provinces. Government forecasters have cautioned that Typhoon Krathon could intensify into a super typhoon as it progresses westward and potentially veers northeastward towards Taiwan in the coming days. Despite these predictions, no casualties or damages have been reported as of now.
Guilmar Cabejo, a police officer on Sabtang island in Batanes, described the situation as the ferocious wind rattling roofs, walls, and trees, leading to deserted streets as residents take cover indoors. Residents have taken precautions by reinforcing their roofs, covering windows with boards, and securing fishing boats ahead of the typhoon’s impact.
The weather agency has issued warnings of a moderate to high risk of life-threatening storm surges in coastal villages of Batanes, Babuyan islands, and Cagayan province. Additionally, there are concerns about roofs being ripped off, trees uprooted, farmlands damaged, and high waves forming due to fierce winds. This has prompted the evacuation of hundreds of villagers from flood-prone areas and the suspension of classes in various northern provinces.
With a history of around 20 storms and typhoons annually, the Philippines is no stranger to natural disasters. It lies within the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a region known for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, making it highly disaster-prone. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan caused widespread devastation, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions in the central Philippines.
