A controversial church known as the Word of Faith Fellowship has emerged as a significant female fan group for former US President Donald Trump. These female members, hailing from North Carolina, have been actively supporting Trump by attending over 250 rallies. The church, founded in 1979, promotes living righteous and godly lives, but has faced criticism for allegedly involving foreigners, including teenagers, in unpaid labour.
At campaign rallies, Trump has highlighted these women as a testament to his popularity among female voters, praising their presence at rallies even without their husbands. The women, known as the “North Carolina Girls,” and their husbands are said to volunteer for the Trump campaign’s advance team, assisting in setting up VIP sections, managing media sign-ins, and providing security.
Despite their significant involvement, Trump has not explicitly named the church during his speeches. The Word of Faith Fellowship came under scrutiny in 1995 following investigations revealing the alleged exploitation of young labourers, including claims of unpaid work and mistreatment. The church vehemently denied these allegations, stating that they were fabricated to tarnish their reputation.
The organisation’s lawyer refuted the accusations, emphasising the church’s innocence against false attacks. In 2018, four congregation members were convicted of federal charges related to an unemployment benefits scheme, though no charges were filed regarding the abuse allegations. The church continues its active role in local Republican party politics, recently supporting a fundraiser for State Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson.
When questioned about their involvement in the Trump campaign, members of the Word of Faith Fellowship defended their support for Trump, citing his leadership qualities and policies. They expressed their belief that Trump embodies the principles and values essential for the nation’s progress. The Independent reached out to the Trump campaign for comment on the church’s attendance at rallies.
Despite controversies surrounding the church, its members remain steadfast in their support for Trump, underscoring their commitment to upholding shared principles and values.
