Plea for help due to worryingly low numbers of on-call Stewartry firefighters

Worrying levels of on-call firefighters in the Stewartry area have prompted a plea for assistance from the region’s fire service chief. Chris Ross, the station commander, expressed his concern about the shortage of available firefighters in the area. At Gatehouse Fire Station, the on-call retained duty system has an availability rate of just 22 per cent, the lowest among the 19 stations in Dumfries and Galloway. This figure is significantly below both the region’s average of 75 per cent and the Scottish average of 58 per cent.

During a meeting of the Stewartry Area Committee, Councillor Andy McFarlane highlighted the issue at Gatehouse Fire Station and inquired about efforts to address the low numbers. Commander Ross explained that recruitment events had been organised to attract new on-call firefighters, with one applicant showing interest so far. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that potential recruits are fully aware of the responsibilities and commitments involved in being an on-call firefighter.

Councillor McFarlane also brought up incidents of violence against firefighters in the Stewartry over the past year and sought more information on those cases. Commander Ross clarified that while there had been recorded acts of violence, none had resulted in significant injuries to firefighters in the region. He stressed the importance of reporting such incidents to identify any emerging trends early and take necessary preventive measures.

Efforts are ongoing to encourage recruitment of on-call firefighters in the Stewartry area to address the current shortage. Anyone interested in joining the fire service is encouraged to reach out to their local fire station for more information and to discuss suitability for the role. The community’s support and participation are crucial in maintaining adequate levels of cover and ensuring the safety of the region.
