Miranda Hart, the renowned comedian, has recently unveiled more details about her husband, Richard Fairs. The 51-year-old comedian surprised fans with the news of her marriage on The One Show, without disclosing her husband’s identity until her appearance at the Cheltenham Literature Festival this weekend.
Hart, best known for her role as the lead character in the sitcom Miranda, exchanged vows with the 60-year-old divorcee in July, following their initial meeting during the lockdown in 2020. According to The Mirror, Hart shared at the literary festival how she and Fairs spent hours chatting in her living room during their first date while waiting for pizza delivery.
She mentioned, “Unfortunately mine had shunted its way across the box and turned into a calzone. I was going on and on about my shunted pizza and it did not seem to faze him. We had already been talking for about two hours at this point and I realised almost immediately that I was in love with him.” Hart added, “It was our first date, and to my surprise, he came back for a second date, despite me having gone on and on about that pizza.”
Fairs, reportedly a building surveyor, first met Hart while attending to the mould issue in her house. He shares two children with his ex-partner Jeanne Speight, with whom he was in a relationship for over 25 years before their separation in 2017. In Hart’s memoir “I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You,” she disclosed that her relationship with Fairs had nearly ended before he proposed at Kew Gardens in London.
Speaking on The One Show, she expressed, “He’s my best friend, we have the best fun and I’m just thrilled to be a young bride at 51.” Hart, who has also opened up about her battle with Lyme disease, shared, “The fact that I met someone during a pandemic, during chronic illness when I couldn’t get out of bed or get out of the house, and I really really wanted to meet someone, I didn’t want to do life on my own any more.” She added, “There is always hope, things can always change.”
After breaking the news on the BBC chat show, Hart expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming response from her fans, calling it “really very touching.” In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she thanked her supporters and stated, “I’ve got my best friend to do life with and it’s wonderful. I’m also utterly thrilled to be back in telly land and having a book out, so thanks so much for all your support.”
Hart wrapped up the video by high-fiving her husband, joking that it was an “exclusive” moment.
