In a spectacular auction event, the iconic Iron Throne from the popular TV series “Game of Thrones” was sold for a staggering $1.49 million. Fans and collectors eagerly gathered to bid on over 900 lots of costumes, props, and other memorabilia from the beloved HBO show, ultimately raising a total of $21.1 million.
The Iron Throne, a replica crafted from plastic and adorned with metallic paint and jewel embellishments, was the most coveted item of the auction. Inspired by the mythical tale of swords melted by dragon breath, the Iron Throne symbolised power struggles throughout the series’ eight-season run.
Heritage Auctions, the organisers of the event in Dallas, stated that the auction attracted more than 4,500 bidders and marked their second-highest-grossing entertainment auction to date. Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena expressed confidence in the auction’s success, highlighting the appeal of owning a piece of the magical world created by the Emmy-winning designers and prop makers of “Game of Thrones.”
Aside from the legendary Iron Throne, other notable items fetched substantial sums at the auction. Jon Snow’s sword, Longclaw, wielded by Kit Harington on screen, was sold for $400,000, while his night’s watch ensemble, complete with a heavy cape, went for $337,500 after intense bidding wars. Costumes worn by Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen and Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister also drew significant interest, with some items selling for thousands over their starting prices.
The auction reflected the enduring impact of “Game of Thrones,” as described by HBO’s senior vice president Jay Roewe. He noted that the series had become a cultural phenomenon and had left a lasting imprint on high-end television and popular culture. The success of the auction reaffirms the show’s lasting legacy, resonating with fans even years after its conclusion.
