Covid hospitalisations spike in the UK amidst the spread of a new variant, as reported by The Independent. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning regarding the alarming rate at which Covid admissions have increased. The latest UKHSA data reveals that the admission rate for individuals testing positive for the Covid XEC variant has risen to 4.5 per 100,000 people in the week leading up to October 6, up from 3.7 in the previous week.
Notably, the North East region has experienced the highest hospital admission rates, reaching 8.12 per 100,000 individuals. Furthermore, individuals aged 85 and older are facing a significant surge, with rates soaring to 52.48 per 100,000 in this age group, according to UKHSA statistics. The emergence of the XEC variant, initially identified in Germany in June, has now been detected in various countries including the United States and Denmark.
This new strain, a combination of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 variants, exhibits symptoms akin to those of prior Covid variants such as fatigue, headaches, a sore throat, and elevated body temperatures. Experts suggest that staying up to date with vaccines and booster shots is crucial for adequate protection against severe illness and hospitalisation, given that the XEC variant remains within the same omicron lineage.
Characterised by mutations in key amino acids on the spike protein, the XEC variant underscores the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices and ensuring clean air, as advised by the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Researchers advocate for enhanced monitoring of the XEC variant to gain deeper insights into its symptoms and behaviour.
Symptoms of the XEC strain mirror those of common colds and flu, including high body temperature, chest discomfort, tiredness, cough, and sore throat. While most individuals tend to recover within a few weeks, some may experience prolonged symptoms. The situation calls for continued vigilance and adherence to preventive measures to manage the escalating spread of the new variant.
