Food Safety Warning Issued to Brits Due to Potential Deadly Allergen
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an urgent health warning to British citizens, particularly those with peanut allergies, advising them to avoid consuming mustard due to a potential deadly allergen. The alert, issued in September, has raised concerns about the safety of mustard products, urging those with peanut allergies to stay vigilant about their food choices.
The FSA’s investigation has identified mustard ingredients sourced from GT Agro Industries, an Indian company, as potentially contaminated. While Leicester-based FGS Ingredients conducted tests on their supplies and found no traces of peanuts, the FSA is urging caution until specific affected products are identified. Darren Whitby, head of incidents at FSA, emphasised the need for those with peanut allergies to avoid mustard-containing products and advised parents to check food labels diligently.
Mustard is a common ingredient found in everyday foods like dips, sauces, salads, and pre-packed sandwiches. The presence of peanut traces in these items poses a serious risk to individuals with peanut allergies, potentially leading to severe reactions. Food businesses have been urged by the FSA to review their supply chains thoroughly and remove any products containing tainted mustard promptly from shelves to ensure consumer safety.
FGS Ingredients Ltd has responded by instructing customers to halt the sale of products containing the affected mustard ingredients. The company clarified that peanuts are not used in their spice blends and are strictly prohibited on their production site. Despite this incident, FGS Ingredients asserts its commitment to supporting the FSA’s investigation and upholding stringent safety measures to prevent allergen contamination.
