DP World Reveals £1 Billion Investment Plan at Summit Following P&O Ferries Controversy
DP World has announced a significant £1 billion investment plan to expand the London Gateway container port during the Government’s investment summit. This news comes in the wake of reports suggesting that DP World, the owner of P&O Ferries, had initially considered delaying the announcement due to criticism from the Transport Secretary.
Last week, Transport Secretary Louise Haigh publicly criticised P&O Ferries, labelling them as a “cowboy operator.” Her comments stemmed from the company’s actions in March 2022 when it unexpectedly dismissed 800 British seafarers and replaced them with cheaper, predominantly overseas staff, citing financial difficulties. In an interview with ITV, Haigh urged consumers to boycott P&O Ferries.
Following these remarks, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer clarified that calls for a boycott did not reflect the Government’s official stance. This development alleviated concerns that DP World might withdraw from the investment summit.
Despite the initial speculation, DP World confirmed its participation in the summit over the weekend and took the opportunity on Monday to unveil its ambitious investment plan. The plan aims to expand London Gateway into the UK’s largest container port within the next five years. This expansion project will involve constructing two new shipping berths, bringing the total berths at the site to six to accommodate the world’s largest container vessels.
Additionally, a second rail terminal will be integrated into the site to manage the anticipated surge in container trade. The company projects that this expansion will generate 400 new permanent job opportunities.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the group chairman and chief executive of DP World, expressed his pride in this significant investment, emphasising DP World’s enduring commitment to the UK. He highlighted that DP World London Gateway will play a crucial role in facilitating Britain’s trade connections with global markets and enhancing supply chain resilience for the entire economy.
The announcement of this substantial investment underscores DP World’s dedication to bolstering trade infrastructure and fostering economic growth in the UK.
