Roy Keane tears into key part of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s game despite stunning goal

Roy Keane Criticises Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Defensive Abilities Despite Stunning Goal

Roy Keane didn’t hold back in his assessment of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance, despite the Liverpool defender scoring a magnificent free-kick and adapting well to playing out of position at left-back during England’s 3-1 victory over Finland in the Nations League. With England leading 1-0 late in the game, Alexander-Arnold stepped up to deliver a brilliant curling free-kick from 25 yards out, before Declan Rice sealed the deal with a late goal, securing a much-needed win for interim manager Lee Carsley.

In a tactical alteration by Carsley, Alexander-Arnold, who usually plays as a right-back, started in an unfamiliar left-back role for England, showcasing his attacking prowess and netting a spectacular goal. Despite praising the quality of the free-kick, Keane chose to focus on Alexander-Arnold’s defensive shortcomings. The former Manchester United captain commended Alexander-Arnold’s technical ability but criticised his decision-making and defensive skills, warning that against stronger opponents, he could be exposed.

Alexander-Arnold’s versatility has been evident under interim boss Carsley, with the defender earning four consecutive starts for England, a first in his international career. While pundit Ian Wright was less critical of the Liverpool star, he questioned whether the left-back position was the best fit for him in the long term. Wright highlighted Alexander-Arnold’s creativity but expressed doubts about his defensive capabilities in that position.

Following his stunning goal, Alexander-Arnold found himself slightly wealthier as his England teammate Jack Grealish disclosed a post-match bet between the two. Grealish promised Alexander-Arnold a £500 bonus if he scored from the free-kick, a challenge that the Liverpool player successfully converted, meaning Grealish will now need to honour his bet.

Overall, despite his remarkable goal-scoring contribution and adaptability, Alexander-Arnold’s defensive abilities came under scrutiny by Keane, highlighting areas for the Liverpool defender to work on as he continues to evolve on the international stage.
