China’s Premier Li Qiang is currently attending a regional security meeting in Pakistan, marking his status as the most prominent leader participating in the event this week. The meeting is part of a regional security grouping established by Russia and China with the aim of countering Western alliances. Despite a recent surge in militant violence in Pakistan, Premier Li is engaging in discussions at the two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) that commenced on Tuesday. The primary focus of the meeting is on enhancing security and economic collaborations among the member states.
Premier Li’s arrival in Islamabad for the SCO meeting is significant as he is the first Chinese premier to visit Pakistan in over ten years. His visit follows a tragic incident where two Chinese workers lost their lives, and another was injured in a suicide bombing in Balochistan province. This attack occurred outside Karachi’s largest airport and targeted Chinese nationals involved in projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The separatists in Balochistan accused the Chinese workers of exploiting the region’s mineral resources.
In a separate incident, 21 coal miners were brutally killed in Balochistan by unidentified gunmen, though the Balochistan Liberation Army denied responsibility. Investigations are ongoing to determine the perpetrators behind this heinous act. Moreover, an attack on a police station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province resulted in the deaths of at least one police officer and three insurgents. The Pakistani Taliban are suspected of carrying out this assault, reflecting their history of targeting security forces across the country.
During his three-day stay, Premier Li is scheduled to hold meetings with Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari along with other key political and military figures. The SCO meeting will not only be attended by China and Russia but also representatives from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Additionally, Iran’s vice president and India’s foreign minister are expected to participate in the summit.
To ensure the safety of all participants, Pakistan has implemented heightened security measures in the capital, including deploying troops and prohibiting public rallies. Premier Li’s presence at the SCO meeting underscores the importance of regional cooperation in addressing security challenges and fostering economic partnerships among member countries.
