A Sherpa teenager who recently made history by becoming the youngest person to summit all 14 of the highest peaks in the world has returned home to Nepal to a hero’s welcome. Nima Rinji Sherpa, aged 18, successfully reached the 8,027-meter summit of Mount Shishapangma in China last week, marking the completion of his remarkable achievement. This surpasses the previous record set by another Sherpa climber who was 30 years old at the time.
Nepal’s Tourism Minister, Badri Prasad Pandey, joined members of the climbing community, fellow Sherpas, and supporters at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to greet Nima Rinji upon his return. Amidst a display of flowers and scarfs, Nima Rinji expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am very happy and I want to say thank you so much everyone. It was a difficult mission but finally I was able to be successful,” to reporters.
Hailing from a renowned family within the Sherpa mountaineering community, Nima Rinji’s father and two uncles operate the Seven Summits Treks in Nepal, a prominent company catering to climbers in Nepal, China, and Pakistan. Sherpas, known for their expertise on the world’s highest peaks, have transitioned from being solely support staff to achieving notable mountaineering feats themselves.
Following his final ascent, Nima Rinji took to Instagram to pay tribute to his fellow Sherpas, emphasising the importance of breaking free from traditional constraints. He highlighted the significance of mountaineering beyond physical labour, portraying it as a testament to strength, resilience, and passion. Nima Rinji called upon the younger generation of Sherpas to defy stereotypes and embrace their potential, encouraging them to view themselves as trailblazers with limitless possibilities.
The teen climber’s return to Nepal has not only made headlines but also serves as an inspiration for Sherpas and climbers worldwide.
