Billy Vunipola, the rugby star playing for Montpellier, has openly shared that he feels in “better shape” since his transition from Saracens and England to France. The 31-year-old made the move to the French Top 14 team after spending 11 years with Saracens. Notably, this move also marked the end of his international career with England, as the Rugby Football Union restricts players who compete for clubs abroad from representing the national team. Vunipola, who proudly represented England 75 times during his international career, expressed his improved physical condition since relocating to France.
Reflecting on his time in France, Vunipola revealed, “I’m probably in better shape than I’ve ever been in the last two or three years.” His final seasons in England were marred by injury struggles. Speaking to Rugbyrama, Vunipola attributed his enhanced fitness not to his former club but to his own efforts, stating, “When I got here and discovered the environment, I just had to make do. I really enjoyed the challenges it gave me.”
Billy Vunipola’s England debut dates back to 2013 against Argentina, with his final international appearance occurring during the World Cup semi-final defeat to South Africa. Throughout much of his career, he shared the field with his brother Mako, but a recent game saw them pitted against each other as Montpellier triumphed over Vannes with a score of 26-24. Reflecting on this unique experience, Vunipola shared, “I think the distance has brought us closer, knowing that he’s not there all the time. As a result, we enjoy these moments together much more.”
Acknowledging the challenge of facing his brother on the field, Vunipola shared, “It was very nice to see him, but it was very difficult to play against him. I wouldn’t say I was trying to avoid him, but let’s say I wasn’t really trying to attack him.”
In summary, Billy Vunipola’s move to France has not only revitalised his physical condition but also presented unique challenges and experiences, further shaping his rugby journey.
