New rules concerning carry-on luggage on planes are expected to be implemented starting in 2025, following the development of new aircraft technology. Airbus has unveiled plans for its upcoming generation of passenger bins, designed to be considerably larger than current overhead bins and adaptable to existing aircraft fleets. These innovative ‘Airspace L Bins’ are projected to offer 60% more space for cabin luggage compared to traditional systems. With the potential introduction of these larger bins, airlines may allow passengers to bring bigger bags onto flights. The bins are set to be retrofitted into certain planes starting from 2025, with one airline already committed to integrating the expanded luggage compartments.
The new bins will accommodate roller bags in a vertical position, a departure from the current flat storage method. The dimensions of cases fitting into these bins are up to 61cm high, 38cm wide, and 25cm deep. Installation of these spacious compartments onto various aircraft can be completed within three to five days. Lufthansa has reportedly become the first airline to sign up for retrofitting the bins and plans to incorporate them into its aircraft by 2025. Airbus’ head of commercial services for Europe, Charbel Youzkatli, affirmed that the demand for larger bins is clear among airline customers as it aims to enhance the passenger experience.
Airlines such as TUI, easyJet, Ryanair, and British Airways each have their own regulations regarding free carry-on luggage allowance, which can vary from one small bag to two. A misunderstanding of these rules could result in additional costs, especially if passengers are required to check in a bag at the airport. Bringing an extra bag to the gate without prior check-in often incurs higher charges.
