Discovery of one of the oldest-ever fossils sheds new light on rise of dinosaurs

A recent discovery of what is believed to be one of the oldest fossils ever found has provided new insights into the rise of dinosaurs. Scientists in Brazil have announced the unearthing of an ancient reptile, dating back approximately 237 million years. Named Gondwanax paraisensis, this four-legged species was similar in size to a small dog, measuring around one meter (39 inches) long and weighing between three to six kg (7 to 13 pounds).

The fossil was discovered in southern Brazil and is thought to have lived during a period of intense heat on Earth. Identified as a new silesaurid, an extinct group of reptiles, there is ongoing debate among paleontologists as to whether silesaurids were direct ancestors of dinosaurs or a separate lineage altogether. The significance of understanding these precursors lies in gaining insights into the evolutionary success of dinosaurs.

Found in a rock layer dating back to the Triassic period, the era when dinosaurs and other ancient creatures first emerged, the Gondwanax paraisensis fossil holds invaluable information about life on Earth millions of years ago. The discovery was made in the town of Paraiso do Sul in Brazil, with the fossil donated by physician Pedro Lucas Porcela Aurelio in 2021, leading to three years of intensive research.

Paleontologist Rodrigo Temp Müller from the Federal University of Santa Maria, who published an article in the scientific journal Gondwana Research detailing the discovery, emphasised the importance of the fossil’s age in shedding light on the origins of dinosaurs. Covered in a thick layer of rock upon donation, the fossil initially revealed only parts of the vertebrae. The name Gondwanax paraisensis pays homage to the ancient Gondwana landmass and the town of Paraiso do Sul.

This groundbreaking discovery offers a rare glimpse into the distant past, with the fossil acting as a time capsule from a bygone era. The findings from this ancient reptile may potentially rewrite the history books on the emergence and evolution of dinosaurs, further enriching our understanding of the planet’s prehistoric inhabitants.
