Scotland’s most popular dog breed has been unveiled in a new study, as reported by the Daily Record. The Shetland Sheepdog, affectionately known as the Sheltie, has secured the top spot among Scottish dog lovers. Originating from the Shetland Islands, this herding dog was officially recognised by the Kennel Club in 1909.
According to the research findings, the Shetland Sheepdog has overtaken other beloved breeds such as the Golden Retriever and the West Highland Terrier. With approximately 2,400 monthly searches, the Sheltie has captured the hearts of many Scots due to its gentle nature, high intelligence, and suitability as a family pet.
Following closely behind in popularity are the Golden Retriever and the West Highland White Terrier, ranking second and third, respectively. The Golden Retriever averages 1,257 monthly searches and can cost up to £2,500, while the West Highland White Terrier garners 1,198 monthly searches with a price tag of up to £2,000.
In the fourth and fifth positions are the German Shepherd and the Cane Corso, with 1,168 and 677 monthly searches, respectively. Each breed comes with its unique characteristics and price ranges, reflecting the diverse preferences of dog owners in Scotland.
The study also highlighted that Scottish dog owners tend to have a strong connection to breeds with a historical significance to the country. This preference for dogs deeply rooted in national heritage sets Scottish dog lovers apart, showing a focus on tradition and practicality rather than fleeting trends.
While smaller designer breeds have gained popularity in other parts of the UK, Scottish dog enthusiasts continue to favour breeds known for their adaptability to the Scottish climate and terrain.
