NASA’s spacecraft is now on a trajectory towards Jupiter’s moon Europa in a groundbreaking mission to uncover the potential conditions for extraterrestrial life. The Europa Clipper, launched by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, is set to arrive at Jupiter after a 5 1/2-year journey. The spacecraft will then orbit Jupiter and conduct close flybys of Europa, which is believed to have a vast ocean hidden beneath its icy shell – a potential hotspot for supporting life.
While the Europa Clipper is not equipped to detect life directly, its mission is to investigate the essential components that could sustain life. By analyzing organic compounds and other indicators beneath Europa’s surface, scientists hope to determine if the moon could harbour microbial life forms.
