Cancer Survivor Inspires College Basketball Doubleheader Exhibition to Support St. Jude
A cancer survivor’s inspirational journey has led to the creation of a unique college basketball doubleheader exhibition event aimed at benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Set to take place on Tuesday night, Memphis will host the Hoops for St. Jude Tip Off Classic at FedExForum, with both the men’s team facing off against No. 9 North Carolina and the women’s team playing defending national champion South Carolina.
The driving force behind this initiative is Nick, a cancer survivor who, at the age of 14, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Despite the challenges he faced, Nick’s resilience and determination have sparked a fundraising event that not only celebrates his upcoming 25th birthday but also raises vital funds for St. Jude.
In recent years, NCAA rule changes have allowed Division I basketball teams to organise exhibitions where all ticket proceeds can be allocated to specific charities. This marks a shift from traditional closed-door scrimmages, with teams like Tennessee and Arkansas also participating in fundraising events to support charitable causes.
The collaborative effort between teams like North Carolina and Memphis, helmed by coaches Hubert Davis and Penny Hardaway, highlights the power of sports in driving social impact. South Carolina’s coach Dawn Staley also emphasised the importance of using such platforms to raise awareness and support for organisations like St. Jude.
Richard Shadyac Jr., President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising arm of St. Jude, underlined the significant impact of events like the Hoops for St. Jude Tip Off Classic in furthering the hospital’s mission to combat childhood cancer and provide care for families in need.
