Paris Motor Show opens during a brewing EV trade war between the EU and China

The Paris Motor Show has opened amidst a brewing trade war over electric vehicles (EVs) between the European Union and China. Auto manufacturers are vying to convince consumers to switch to electric vehicles by showcasing more affordable and technologically advanced models at the event.

The event, which takes place every two years and traces its roots back to 1898, has historically been a significant platform for the industry. Despite the EU’s threats to impose tariffs on Chinese EV imports, manufacturers from China are prominently present at the show. In response, European automakers are ramping up efforts to attract customers who have been deterred by high prices of EVs.

During the opening day of the show, Chinese EV startups Leapmotor and XPeng introduced new models featuring cutting-edge technology. Leapmotor unveiled a compact electric SUV, the B10, which will be produced in Poland for the European market. Additionally, they presented a smaller electric commuter car, the T03, priced at 18,900 euros and a larger family car, the C10, priced at 36,400 euros.

XPeng, a Chinese EV manufacturer, revealed a sleek sedan, the P7+, and expressed plans to expand into the European market starting next year. However, uncertainties loom due to the EU’s potential import duties on Chinese electric vehicles. The company fears that these tariffs could impact their business model and profit margins significantly.

Furthermore, manufacturers of small electric vehicles suitable for teenagers are also gaining traction in the market. These vehicles, which can be driven without a license starting at age 14 in Europe, are appealing to younger drivers and parents concerned about safety. Brands like Citroen and Renault subsidiary Mobilize are offering two-seater models designed for urban mobility with limited speed capabilities.

The Paris Motor Show serves as a battleground for automakers navigating the shifting landscape of the EV market amidst geopolitical tensions and evolving consumer preferences. As the industry continues to innovate and adapt, the competition to capture the hearts of consumers with affordable and sustainable electric vehicles intensifies.
