‘I got these scissors next to your face’: Hairdresser accused of holding customer hostage over $50 bill

A Memphis hair stylist has been arrested for allegedly holding a customer hostage over a $50 fee. The incident took place at the Luv My Hair Salon on September 13, where the victim, Latoya Humphrey, had gone for a hair appointment. Humphrey had paid the stylist, 31-year-old Mychelle Ray, a $50 deposit and an additional $410 through the Zelle online banking app for the services.

When Ray demanded an extra $50 surprise fee towards the end of the appointment, Humphrey questioned the charge. This led to Ray becoming irate, cursing, and yelling at her. She even went as far as threatening the customer by saying, “Don’t move because I got these scissors next to your face.” As Humphrey tried to leave the salon, Ray locked the door and blocked her exit, insisting, “You’re not going anywhere until you pay me.”

In fear for her safety, Humphrey called 911 for help. Authorities intervened and informed Ray that her actions were criminal. The victim identified Ray in a photo lineup consisting of six individuals. Consequently, Mychelle Ray was charged with aggravated assault, a felony, and false imprisonment, a misdemeanor. Following her arrest, she was taken to the Shelby County Jail and later released on a $7,500 bond. Ray’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 25, 2024.

The volatile incident at the hair salon has sparked outrage and concern among customers and the local community. Such behaviour is unacceptable and has no place in any professional setting, especially one where clients expect to feel safe and respected. Hairstylists and other service providers are expected to conduct themselves professionally and with integrity, ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of their customers at all times.

This event serves as a reminder of the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct in the service industry. It also highlights the need for clear communication and transparency regarding service fees to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts between service providers and customers. As the case progresses through the legal system, many will be watching closely to see how justice is served and what measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
