Russian forces have been reported to be using illicit Starlink terminals to significantly enhance their combat capabilities on the battlefield during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite US sanctions aimed at restricting this technology, Ukrainian soldiers on the frontline have observed the proliferation of these terminals among Russian troops, aiding in their recent military successes.
The Starlink terminals, known for providing real-time battlefield views through drones and secure communication channels, have made their way to Russian forces through the black market. These terminals have played a crucial role in supporting Russian operations and contributing to their advances on the battlefield.
While the Ukrainian military has extensively utilised tens of thousands of Starlink dishes to bolster their operations, Russian forces have effectively closed the technological gap between the two sides. Ukrainian officers have voiced their concern over being “overpowered” by the enhanced capabilities brought by Starlink, which reportedly impacted the fall of Vuhledar, a town in eastern Ukraine.
Soldiers on the ground have expressed frustration towards Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and the creator of Starlink, accusing him of not doing enough to prevent the misuse of the technology. Although SpaceX initially provided free Starlink connections to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in 2022, the high costs eventually led to billing the Pentagon $14.1 million for six months of service.
The reliable internet connectivity offered by Starlink has revolutionised Ukrainian military operations, enabling leaders to coordinate assaults with live drone feeds and adjust artillery coordinates in real-time. This connectivity has drastically improved operational efficiency for both sides, as Russian troops have adopted similar tactics with the assistance of Starlink.
Efforts by Kyiv and Washington to prevent the misuse of Starlink by Russian forces have faced significant obstacles, including enforcing sanctions and technical complexities in restricting access to the network. Despite attempts to curb the proliferation of Starlink terminals among Russian troops, a grey market has emerged, fuelled by high demand from both military forces and private buyers.
On the ground, Ukrainian soldiers actively target enemy terminals, while recent battles have showcased the use of large drones equipped with Starlink terminals to enhance precision and adaptability. The increasing presence of these terminals in Russian operations highlights the pressing need for more robust measures to prevent their exploitation and ensure a level playing field.
“It is something that kills us,” remarked Alexander, a battalion commander in the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade, emphasising the critical role Starlink plays in Russian military operations. The utilization of Starlink technology in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to evolve, raising challenges and prompting calls for increased vigilance to prevent its misuse.
