Ka Death: Underground Rapper and New York Firefighter Passes Away at 52
Kaseem Ryan, known professionally as the underground rapper Ka, has tragically passed away at the age of 52. Alongside his music career, Ryan spent twenty years serving with the New York Fire Department.

The news of Ryan’s death was shared through a post on his official Instagram page, stating, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Kaseem Ryan (1972-2024), the rapper and producer known as Ka, who died unexpectedly in New York City on October 12.” Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka dedicated his life to serving his city, community, and music.

As a 20-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, Ka bravely put his life on the line to protect his fellow citizens, even responding as a first responder during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The post also mentioned Ka’s significant musical legacy, highlighted by his eleven self-released solo albums.

Ka is survived by his wife, mother, and sister, and the family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss. Ryan initially gained attention as a member of the underground hip-hop group Natural Elements before departing in 1994.

In 2008, he featured on GZA’s album “Pro Tools” and released his debut album “Iron Works” the same year. Known for his unique vocals and poetic lyrics, Ka’s music resonated with fans, with his most recent album, “The Thief Next to Jesus,” released this August receiving widespread acclaim.

Reflecting on his dual careers in a 2013 interview with Complex, Ryan shared the unexpected revelation of his rap career to his fellow firefighters. The news came when one of his colleagues recognized his music while driving home and played a track, causing a stir amongst the team.

Ka’s impact on the music industry and his dedication as a firefighter have left a lasting impression on those who knew him. His contribution to both fields will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
