Scots boxer told he would never walk again after horror drug deal stabbing ready for ring return

Scots Boxer Overcomes Adversity to Prepare for Ring Return

Former Scottish Cruiserweight and Heavyweight champion, Jay Carrigan-McFarlane, is defying the odds by stepping back into the professional boxing ring after a harrowing experience that left him fighting for his life. The 26-year-old had spiraled into addiction, involving himself in drug deals to sustain his habits while still pursuing his boxing career. However, a drug deal near Doncaster turned into a nightmare when he was ambushed and stabbed multiple times on March 13, 2020, leaving him with serious injuries and facing the grim prognosis of never being able to walk unassisted again.

Despite the bleak outlook from doctors, Jay’s resilience and determination have propelled him towards a remarkable recovery. After being sober for six months, a milestone he hadn’t achieved since the age of 13, the boxer is gearing up for his next bout at the Crown Plaza in Glasgow on October 26. Reflecting on his journey, Jay shared, “I got stabbed after getting caught up in a life I didn’t want. I owed a bit of money, and I got forced to do a job I didn’t want to do. It turned out to be a set-up.”

Jay’s road to recovery hasn’t been easy, with the mental and physical toll of his injuries weighing heavily on him. Battling mental health issues and struggling to adapt to a new way of life, Jay found himself at rock bottom. However, with unwavering determination and a newfound sobriety, he has turned his life around, shedding five-and-a-half stone since May and regaining his strength both physically and mentally. He acknowledged the transformative power of sobriety, stating, “I would never change anything that has happened to me. Although, I wish I had taken things more seriously sooner.”

As he prepares for his upcoming fight, Jay plans to honour his late coach, Bert Watt, by wearing his colours in the ring, a tribute he felt unworthy of in the past. Speaking about his return to boxing, Jay expressed, “I never wore them before because I didn’t want to disrespect him with the way I was behaving. But I’m back now, and I hope he’s watching down on me and is proud.”

The story of Jay Carrigan-McFarlane serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. By overcoming his demons and embracing a new path, he is not only reclaiming his place in the boxing world but also inspiring others with his courage and determination.
