A former math teacher in Missouri, Hailey Clifton-Carmack, has been sentenced to four years in prison for engaging in a sexual relationship with a student. The teacher was found guilty of leaving scratches on the student’s back during sexual encounters and using other students as lookouts.
Clifton-Carmack, who taught at Laquey High School in Pulaski County, Missouri, until her arrest in January 2024, initially denied the allegations of the relationship when questioned by the police. However, investigators found incriminating messages on her phone exchanged between her and the student confirming their illicit relationship. The student’s father also corroborated the relationship and revealed that Clifton-Carmack had used other students as lookouts while engaging in sexual activities.
Following a plea deal, Clifton-Carmack pleaded guilty to sexual contact with a student, resulting in the dropping of additional charges including endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree statutory rape, and fourth-degree child molestation. The court has ordered her to undergo a sex offender treatment program with a review after 90 days to determine if the remainder of her sentence may be suspended.
Upon receiving a tip-off from a classmate about the inappropriate relationship, investigators were made aware of the situation. The student involved showed his classmates the marks on his back caused by the teacher, prompting further investigation into Clifton-Carmack’s misconduct. The student who reported the incident expressed concerns about the teacher’s overly friendly behaviour with students, indicating a pattern of inappropriate conduct.
School officials confirmed that Clifton-Carmack had not been employed since December 2023 and stated that they did not expect her to return to her teaching position. The arrest of the former math teacher shed light on a disturbing case of abuse of power and breach of trust within an educational setting, leading to her sentencing and subsequent legal proceedings.
