Leaf-peepers are flocking to see New England’s brilliant fall colors

Leaf-peepers are making their way to New England to witness the stunning fall foliage. The region is currently experiencing its peak leaf-watching season, attracting visitors from places as far as Florida and Berlin who are eager to embark on scenic drives, train journeys, and bus tours to admire the vibrant reds, oranges, and bronzes of autumn. With charming towns and covered bridges nestled amidst the changing forests, rural Northeast provides the perfect backdrop for observing nature’s annual spectacle.

Teddy Willey, the general manager of Frog Rock Tavern in Meredith, New Hampshire, highlighted the accessibility of leaf-peeping as a tourist activity. He mentioned that one does not require exceptional athletic abilities or a hefty budget to participate, simply the willingness to hop in a car and head north. Welcoming a busload of tourists from Indiana, Willey observed the excitement among visitors as they immersed themselves in the breathtaking landscapes.

Among the tourists was Vicky Boesch from Fort Wayne, who expressed admiration for Vermont’s picturesque scenery, noting how the sunlight accentuated the beauty of the leaves on the mountains. She also appreciated the region’s unique architecture, lakes, and towns, which provided a refreshing contrast to her hometown in Indiana. Gordon Cochran from Lake View, Iowa, shared his delightful experience of a leisurely ride on the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad during his visit to New Hampshire to see his daughter.

Despite the popularity of leaf-peeping, recent seasons have faced disruptions due to weather conditions attributed to climate change. The impact of global warming includes droughts that lead to leaves browning and withering prematurely, affecting the vibrant display of colours. Willey, although not a self-proclaimed “leaf guy,” recognised the beauty of the season, especially during scenic drives across the Lakes Region in eastern New Hampshire, where he realised the allure of the place he calls home.

As New England continues to be a sought-after destination for leaf-peepers, the region’s autumnal charm and natural beauty serve as a compelling draw for visitors seeking a glimpse of nature’s colourful spectacle.
