Elderly individuals who live alone are advised to pay special attention to their diet to protect their heart, memory, and bones, according to a recent study. The study, which involved nearly 4,000 UK adults aged 50 and above, found that those who experienced social isolation were more likely to have deficiencies in key nutrients such as vitamins C and B6, folate, potassium, and magnesium. Researchers from University College London (UCL) highlighted that inadequate intake of these essential minerals is associated with a higher risk of heart problems, cognitive decline, and compromised bone and skin health.
Professor Andrew Steptoe from UCL Behavioural Science and Health noted that social isolation could lead to a lack of micronutrients in the diet, increasing the susceptibility to health issues in older age. He explained that being isolated may limit access to information about healthy eating and discourage a varied diet among the elderly. These vital micronutrients are commonly found in fruits, nuts, vegetables, fish, seeds, and legumes like peas, beans, and lentils.
A study published in the journal Age and Ageing based on data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (Elsa) further reinforced these findings. It revealed that many older adults were not consuming sufficient amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron, leading to symptoms such as fatigue and dizziness. The researchers observed a correlation between higher social isolation scores and lower intake of the five key micronutrients over a two-year period. However, loneliness itself did not show a direct link to reduced nutrient levels.
Experts emphasised that addressing nutrient deficiencies was more about practical challenges related to social ties rather than emotional loneliness. Dr. Camille Lassale from ISGlobal in Barcelona highlighted the importance of a balanced diet that includes plant-based foods, fish, and nuts for overall health and well-being. Ensuring access to these nutritious food sources is crucial, especially for elderly individuals living alone or in isolation.
