A Scottish teenage girl, Niamh Connell, aged 15, has been diagnosed with a rare cancer after experiencing an “unbearable” itch. The ordeal began in June when Niamh developed a constant itch that was initially mistaken for an allergic reaction. Despite following GP advice to keep a diary of her food and beauty products, the itching worsened, leading to sleep disturbances and skin clawing. When a lump emerged on her neck, Niamh was rushed to the hospital where a CT scan, biopsy, and ultrasound revealed Hodgkin lymphoma in August. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
Tragically, Niamh’s family faced another blow when her aunt, Mhaired, passed away at 35 due to mental health issues and alcohol dependence in September. Niamh’s grandparents, Deborah and Brian Connell, initiated a fundraiser for Teenage Cancer Trust by shaving their heads in support of Niamh and in memory of Mhaired. Deborah described Niamh as a previously glamorous girl who now struggles with her changing appearance due to chemotherapy, affecting her social life.
Deborah and Brian, who are legal guardians to Niamh and her siblings, are committed to supporting the children through this challenging time. Niamh’s diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma came after months of unbearable itching and health investigations, highlighting the importance of trusting one’s instincts regarding any concerning health changes.
Despite the emotional turmoil of Niamh’s diagnosis and Mhaired’s passing, Deborah and Brian have been touched by the support received through their fundraising efforts. They are determined to help Niamh return to a healthy and happy life. Niamh’s message to others facing health concerns is to trust their gut instinct and seek medical attention promptly. The family hopes to raise awareness and funds for Teenage Cancer Trust to assist other young people battling cancer.
