Elon Musk is set to campaign in the critical swing state of Pennsylvania this week after funnelling $75m into efforts to help Donald Trump win the 2024 election. The billionaire, one of Trump’s most deep-pocketed supporters, announced plans to give “a series of talks” in the battleground state from Wednesday through Monday.
Musk shared in a post on X: “If you’d like to attend one of my talks, there’s no attendance fee. You just need to have signed our petition supporting free speech & right to bear arms & have voted in this election.” Between July and September, the world’s richest man contributed nearly $75m to his pro-Trump super PAC America, as per election filings.
The PAC aims to get one million voters in swing states to sign Musk’s petition, offering $47 to people who refer others to sign it. Pennsylvania, being a crucial swing state, could play a decisive role in the presidential election. Recent polling shows a tight race between the candidates in the state.
Having shown support for Trump earlier this year, Musk has emerged as one of the Republican candidate’s most vocal backers. Trump, in turn, has commended Musk as a genius and pledged to appoint him to oversee significant spending cuts in the government. Musk reinforced his loyalty by appearing on stage with Trump at a recent campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
During the rally, Musk emphasised the significance of the upcoming election, stating, “I think this election is the most important election of our lifetime.” He asserted that Trump must win to safeguard the Constitution and democracy in America, branding it a “must win situation.” Musk also urged Americans to register to vote and made unsupported claims about Democrats intending to eliminate elections.
While Musk’s public support for Trump may seem recent, he has been a notable donor in Republican circles for years, with significant contributions to various groups affiliated with prominent figures such as Stephen Miller and Ron DeSantis. Through his social media platform X, acquired for $44bn in 2022, Musk has provided Trump and his allies with a substantial platform.
As the US election draws near, Musk’s involvement in campaigning in Pennsylvania underscores the importance of swing states in determining the election outcome and the significant role wealthy individuals play in supporting political candidates. The upcoming talks in Pennsylvania are expected to further showcase Musk’s dedication to assisting Trump’s re-election bid.
